Below are details about optometry continuing education and license renewal in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island Optometry Continuing Education Requirements: Optometrists with amplified therapeutic privileges (those authorized to administer and prescribe pharmaceutical agents) are required to complete 20 hours every year, due by January 31. At least 10 hours must be in pharmacology for the treatment and management of ocular conditions. Optometrists without amplified therapeutic privileges must complete 16 hours every year.

Rhode Island accepts all 16 to 20 hours in approved online continuing education courses. Licensee must attest completion on state board forms and are subject to audit. 

First Time Renewals: Optometrists initially licensed after the February 1st renewal date shall be exempt from the continuing education requirements until the date of the next renewal cycle.

Access Optometry is accredited by COPE to provide continuing education for optometrists. These courses are accepted for optometry license renewal by the Rhode Island Board of Examiners in Optometry.
